Cubic zirconia is the stone in most of what we make in the interchangeable line. The Blue Halo, Blue Drop, Blue Duo, and Ruby and Emerald pieces each carry cubic zirconia in the evening element, and both interchangeable rings ship with seven swap stones cut from the same material. The category has a lot of vague marketing around it, so this piece is precise: what cubic zirconia actually is, how it is graded, why the grade matters more in an interchangeable setting than in a fixed one, and what to expect from the stones across years of daily wear.

We use AAAAA grade cubic zirconia across the entire Loretana line, in the earrings and in the interchangeable rings alike. The reasons are technical and worth explaining, because a stone that is lifted out of its setting and replaced dozens of times a year is asked to do something a fixed stone never is.

What cubic zirconia actually is

Cubic zirconia is a synthetic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide, grown under controlled heat and pressure in an industrial furnace and then cut and polished with the same techniques used on natural gemstones. The result is a transparent, faceted stone with optical properties comparable to a diamond, though it is chemically and structurally different from one.

Two properties matter for jewelry. Its hardness sits at 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, which is hard enough for daily wear in earrings, rings, and pendants but softer than a diamond (Mohs 10) when scratched against the same surface. Its refractive index is 2.15 to 2.18, against diamond's 2.42, which gives cubic zirconia less brilliance than a diamond but more dispersion (spectral flash, the fire that scatters white light into colored highlights).

Under evening light, particularly candlelight or warm restaurant lighting, cubic zirconia can produce more visible color flash than a comparable diamond, because its higher dispersion catches warm-toned photons more visibly. This is not a claim that cubic zirconia is a diamond replacement in any general sense; it is a specific observation about how it performs in the light conditions where interchangeable evening earrings are usually worn.

The grading system, A through AAAAA

The industry grades cubic zirconia on a five-tier scale, from A at the low end to AAAAA at the high end. The grades reflect three properties: clarity, cut precision, and color stability across time.

A and AA grades. Used in low-cost costume jewelry. Visible inclusions inside the stone at 10x magnification, soft cuts that lose their sparkle quickly, and a tendency to develop a milky haze after six to twelve months of wear. Acceptable for novelty pieces that will not last past a season. Not suitable for jewelry meant to be worn continuously.

AAA grade. The common working standard for fine cubic zirconia jewelry. High clarity with no inclusions visible to the naked eye, precise machine-cut facets that hold their reflectivity across years, and stable color across years of normal wear. It is the grade a careful buyer should expect as a minimum from a hallmarked silver studio in this category.

AAAA grade. Higher clarity, hand-finished cuts, and slightly stronger fire under low light. The marginal visual difference between AAA and AAAA is usually only visible under direct side-by-side comparison, but the cut quality holds longer under continuous handling.

AAAAA grade. The highest commercial grade. Indistinguishable from a well-cut diamond to the naked eye in most lighting. Cut to the tightest tolerances, which matters specifically in interchangeable settings where the stone must seat perfectly in the same cup after being lifted and replaced. This is the grade we use across the Loretana line, in the earrings and in the interchangeable rings.

These grades are industry conventions, not government-regulated standards. There is no state office issuing grade certifications the way Lietuvos prabavimo rūmai issues 925 hallmarks. What backs the grade claim is the reputation and operational discipline of the studio applying it. An assay-verified studio is more likely to grade stones accurately because both signals come from the same operational culture.

Why the grade matters more in an interchangeable setting

In a fixed piece of jewelry, the stone is set once and stays. The buyer inspects it at purchase and the judgment holds for the life of the piece. Nothing about the stone's daily experience changes.

In an interchangeable piece, the stone moves. Each swap involves lifting the stone out of its cup and placing a different one in. Even at weekly swap intervals, a stone in a Loretana Interchangeable Flower Ring may be handled a hundred and fifty times across three years. Three things change as a result of that handling.

The stone surface contacts skin oils and air more often. Lower-grade stones absorb micro-residues at the surface, which dulls the sparkle visibly over months. AAAAA stones resist absorption and stay clear longer, because the crystal itself is denser and the facet polish is tighter.

The stone experiences small mechanical stresses during each swap. A low-grade stone with internal stress lines from crystal growth can develop a hairline crack from repeated handling that a hand-set fixed stone would never encounter. AAAAA stones are tested for internal stress before they leave the cutting workshop and go through additional quality control.

The cut precision determines how the stone seats in the bezel cup. A stone cut to loose tolerances does not seat in exactly the same position every time. It rocks slightly, or sits half a millimeter off-center, and the visual reads inconsistent between swaps. AAAAA stones are cut to tight enough tolerances that the seat is repeatable to the eye every time.

This is the reason we do not compromise on grade anywhere in the line. An earring element that is swapped between two matched looks and a ring stone that rotates through seven colors face the same fundamental problem: the stone has to sit correctly, every time, for years.

How AAAAA stones behave under daily wear

A Loretana AAAAA cubic zirconia stone in an interchangeable earring, worn three to five times a week, should hold its visual quality for five years or longer without any intervention beyond a monthly wipe with a soft cloth. The most common pattern of long-term wear is a faint surface haze from skin oils, which lifts off with warm water and mild dish soap.

The cut edges, where facets meet, are the slowest-wearing points. Under heavy contact (sleeping in the piece, frequent physical work with the hands) the edges soften across years, which reduces the fire of the stone slightly. Removing the piece at night and for physical work extends this life considerably.

What cubic zirconia does not survive well is direct chemical exposure. Chlorine, bleach, and strong solvents can etch the surface at the micron level, and etching dulls the stone permanently. The piece should be removed before swimming, cleaning with harsh products, or any professional chemical handling.

How to clean a cubic zirconia swap stone

The routine is short and matters more in interchangeable settings than in fixed ones because the stone gets handled during swaps.

  1. Remove the swap element from the setting.
  2. Wipe the stone with a soft microfiber cloth to lift surface oils.
  3. If a residue remains, rinse the element in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Brush the facets gently with a soft toothbrush.
  4. Rinse in clean warm water.
  5. Pat dry with a soft cloth. Do not rub.
  6. Allow to air dry fully before re-seating in the interchangeable setting.

Do not use ultrasonic cleaners on interchangeable stones unless the manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility. The vibration can shift stones in their settings and, in some cases, create hairline stress on the stone itself.

The colored stones in the Loretana line

Several pieces in the interchangeable line use colored cubic zirconia. The Blue Halo, Blue Drop, and Blue Duo use blue stones. The Ruby and Emerald hoops use ruby-tone and emerald-tone stones. The two interchangeable rings ship with seven swap stones each, covering the most common palette requests: clear, blue, pink, green, purple, warm-toned, and red.

The color in each of these is grown into the crystal itself during manufacturing, by introducing trace amounts of metal oxides into the furnace during crystal growth. Cobalt oxide gives blue. Chromium and vanadium give green. Cerium and praseodymium give red. Iron and chromium in combination give purple.

Because the color is in the crystal, it is permanent. It does not fade with wear, light exposure, or cleaning. Inferior colored cubic zirconia, where the color is applied to the surface of a clear crystal after cutting, does fade visibly within a year. Loretana's colored stones are grown-color, not surface-dyed, across the interchangeable line.

When natural gemstones make more sense than cubic zirconia

Cubic zirconia is the correct stone for most interchangeable settings. It is durable enough for the daily handling the format involves, optically excellent, and affordable enough that the stone does not become the barrier to a complete piece at a working price point.

Natural gemstones (sapphires, rubies, emeralds, diamonds) work in interchangeable settings only when the buyer accepts three trade-offs. The cost per stone is several times higher, which changes the economics of a seven-stone ring completely. Handling at each swap has to be more careful, because most natural stones are softer or more fracture-prone than cubic zirconia. And a lost or damaged stone cannot be replaced identically, because each natural stone is unique.

The Loretana interchangeable line uses cubic zirconia across the board because it lets us build closed pieces at prices between 25.99 and 98.99 euros without compromising on the stone's optical or mechanical behavior. A natural-stone interchangeable line would be a different product with a different customer.
