Rhodium is a metal from the platinum group, silver-white in color and extraordinarily hard, and a plating of it a few microns thick sits on top of every 925 silver piece we ship. This is a decision about mechanics and durability as much as about how the piece looks, and it is worth spending an article explaining what the plating actually does, because most buyers do not know that the shine on their silver comes from a coating rather than from the silver itself.

What rhodium is, precisely

Rhodium is element 45 on the periodic table, a member of the platinum group along with platinum, palladium, iridium, and ruthenium. It is one of the rarest metals in the earth's crust, mined mainly as a byproduct of platinum extraction in South Africa and Russia. Its market price fluctuates between two and ten times the price of gold per gram, depending on demand from the automotive catalytic converter industry, which consumes the majority of world production.

For jewelry, three properties of rhodium matter. Its color is a bright, cool, neutral white, whiter than silver and whiter than platinum. Its hardness is Mohs 6, more than twice that of 925 silver (Mohs 2.5), which means it resists scratches, dents, and abrasion far better than the underlying silver alloy. And it is completely non-reactive at normal temperatures, so it does not tarnish, oxidize, or corrode in air, water, sweat, or common household chemicals.

All three properties are what the plating gives to the silver piece underneath. The silver is what carries the mechanical function and what earns the hallmark. The rhodium is what protects the silver and what carries the visible shine.

Why we plate every silver Loretana piece

The decision to plate is not aesthetic. It is a mechanical decision made because 925 silver, alone, is not durable enough for a piece worn continuously and worked mechanically the way an interchangeable hoop is worked.

Consider what happens to unplated 925 silver across a year of daily wear. The surface reacts with the sulfur in the air, mostly from cars and industrial emissions, and darkens to a dull grey. The metal at the closure points, which is soft at Mohs 2.5, wears from friction with skin, clothing, and its own opposite face at every opening. The click closure loses tension because the mating surfaces have deformed under repeated pressure. By the end of the second year, the piece looks tarnished from arm's length and the closure has softened noticeably in the hand.

Rhodium plating changes all of that. The plated surface does not tarnish, because rhodium does not react with sulfur. The plated surface resists scratches and denting because Mohs 6 is well above the hardness of anything the wearer encounters in normal life. The friction surfaces at the closure wear at roughly a fifth the rate of unplated silver, which extends the useful life of the mechanism by years rather than months.

The plating on the inside of the hoop and on the internal mating surfaces of the closure is not decorative. It is where the wear happens, and it is where the plating earns its keep.

How thick the plating is and why it matters

Rhodium plating for jewelry ranges from about 0.1 microns at the cheap end of the market to about 2.5 microns at the high end. A micron is one thousandth of a millimeter. To give a sense of scale, a sheet of copy paper is about 100 microns thick, so the plating layer is between one thousandth and one fortieth of a sheet of paper in thickness.

The plating thickness determines how long the coating lasts before it wears through to the silver beneath. Very thin plating (0.1 to 0.3 microns) wears through in three to six months of daily wear on high-friction pieces like rings and hoop closures. Standard plating (0.5 to 1 micron) lasts one to three years. Heavy plating (1.5 to 2.5 microns) lasts three to seven years or longer.

Loretana plates in the standard-to-heavy range for interchangeable pieces, with additional thickness at high-friction points like the hinge and the closure. This is a deliberate cost decision. A slightly thicker plating uses more rhodium and costs the studio more per piece, but the piece stays in its as-shipped condition for years longer, which is the trade-off we make.

Most buyers cannot inspect plating thickness with the eye. Two proxies help. First, the retail price: pieces priced below about 20 euros in 925 silver almost certainly use minimal plating because rhodium is expensive and the margins do not support more. Second, the studio's stated plating spec, if it publishes one. A studio that plates seriously usually says so, because it is a real cost decision worth communicating.

What happens when the plating wears

The plating does eventually wear. This is worth stating clearly, because "rhodium-plated" reads to some buyers as "permanent" and it is not.

On a heavily worn interchangeable hoop, the first place the plating thins is at the closure contact points, where the two faces of the hoop meet during opening and closing. On a ring, it is on the inside of the band where the finger flexes and on the top of the shoulders where the ring rubs against neighboring fingers. On a hoop that lives mostly in one ear position without opening, the plating on the outside of the hoop lasts nearly indefinitely.

The visible signs of wear come in a specific order. First, the shine at the wear point softens slightly, because the surface roughness increases even before the plating fails. Second, the plating develops microscopic pinholes at the contact area, still invisible to the eye but visible at 10x magnification. Third, the pinholes coalesce into visible patches where the silver beneath shows through as a slightly warmer, slightly duller color than the surrounding rhodium. Fourth, the exposed silver tarnishes preferentially, producing a darker patch that grows visibly.

By the time step four is visible from arm's length, the piece has typically had five to eight years of daily wear. That is when a re-plating service becomes worth considering.

Re-plating: what it involves and what it costs

Re-plating removes the worn plating layer (or what remains of it), polishes the silver underneath to a smooth surface, and applies a fresh rhodium layer at the same thickness as the original.

The process takes place in an electroplating bath. The piece is cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, immersed in a chemical stripping bath to remove old plating, polished mechanically to prepare the surface, and then immersed in a rhodium bath where an electric current deposits fresh rhodium onto the silver at a controlled rate. Total time in the studio is usually two to five business days depending on the queue.

Cost for a standard re-plating of a hoop or ring runs 25 to 45 euros in the Baltic market. This is a real cost, but it is far less than replacing the piece, and it restores the piece to as-shipped condition for another five to eight years. Over a fifteen year life, a piece typically needs one re-plating.

Habits that extend plating life

The plating on a well-made interchangeable piece should last five years or longer without intervention. Four habits shift that number toward the top of the range.

Remove the piece before physical activity involving the hands or ears. Gardening, DIY work, sports, and cleaning all abrade plating faster than any daily activity. A piece removed for two hours of gardening loses far less plating than a piece worn through the same two hours.

Apply cosmetics, perfume, and hairspray before putting the piece on. The chemicals in these products do not directly damage rhodium, but they build up in the hinge and closure of a hoop, where they accelerate friction wear. Waiting five minutes after applying cosmetics before putting on the piece keeps the mating surfaces clean.

Store the piece dry. Rhodium does not corrode in moisture, but the silver beneath any thin spot in the plating does. A piece put away wet after a shower will develop small tarnish spots where the plating is already thinnest.

Clean gently and rarely. Rhodium is hard, but it is thin. Aggressive polishing with abrasive cloths, silver dip solutions, or ultrasonic cleaners removes plating along with any dirt. A soft microfiber cloth and warm water with a drop of mild soap is the correct routine, applied once a month at most.

Rhodium plating and hypoallergenic performance

One further reason the plating matters: rhodium is completely biologically inert. It does not react with skin, does not release ions, and does not trigger any known metal allergy. The plating creates a physical barrier between the wearer's skin and the underlying silver alloy.

For most wearers this does not matter, because 925 sterling silver from a copper-based alloy (which is what we use) is itself hypoallergenic and meets the EU Nickel Directive limits for skin-contact jewelry. But for wearers with severely reactive skin, the rhodium plating adds a second layer of protection that is meaningful. A rhodium-plated 925 piece is one of the least reactive pieces of jewelry it is possible to wear.

When rhodium plating is the wrong choice

Not every silver piece should be plated. Two cases are worth stating.

Antique or oxidized-finish silver. Some traditional Baltic silver pieces are intentionally darkened (oxidized) to bring out engraved details. Rhodium plating would erase the effect. These pieces need no plating and should not receive it.

Textured silver where the texture is the design. Rhodium plating fills fine detail slightly and can dull very intricate textural work. On smooth, polished, or moderately textured pieces the effect is invisible. On pieces where the texture is the aesthetic center, plating is a compromise.
