How Loretana ring sizes work

How to measure your ring size at home

Three methods work. Any one of them, done carefully, is more accurate than a ring size guessed from an existing piece that no longer fits or from a family member's estimation.

Method 1: Measure a ring you already wear. The most accurate. Use a small ruler or caliper to measure the inner diameter of an existing ring on the intended finger, corner to corner. Round to the nearest half millimeter.

Method 2: Paper strip around the finger. Cut a strip of paper 5 mm wide and 10 cm long. Wrap it around the base of the finger, mark where the strip overlaps, measure the length in millimeters, divide by pi (3.14159), and round to the nearest half millimeter. This gives the inner diameter directly.

Method 3: Printable ring sizer. Loretana provides a printable ring sizer on the sizing page. Print at 100 percent scale (verify with the printed ruler on the sheet), cut out the sizer, and use it to match either an existing ring or the intended finger.

Three rules make any measurement accurate. Measure in the evening, when the finger is at its natural largest. Measure at room temperature, not after a hot shower or a cold walk. Measure the specific finger the ring will be worn on, since ring finger sizes vary between hands.

Why we do not sell adjustable rings

Adjustable rings (open-back rings that can be pinched to fit a range of sizes) are common in mass-market silver, but they are not part of the Loretana catalog. Two reasons worth stating openly.

First, an adjustable ring is a structural compromise. The band has to flex, which means it cannot carry the mechanism weight or the stone setting of a closed band. On an interchangeable Flower Ring or a stone-set band, the setting depends on the ring being rigid. An adjustable band lets the setting drift as the ring flexes, and the stone loses its seated position.

Second, adjustable rings encourage sloppy sizing at the point of purchase. The buyer assumes she can fix a bad measurement by pinching. In practice, adjusted rings deform back toward their original shape over months of wear, so the wearer ends up with a badly fitting ring anyway. How to build a silver ring stack
